The new roundabout intersection will see a reduction in severe crashes.
The intersection of CSAH 17 (Madison Avenue) and Haefner Drive consisted of a four-lane divided highway on CSAH 17 with a two-lane side street stop control on Haefner Drive. An increase in development, coupled with the construction of a roundabout intersection on CSAH 17 at MN 22 and Carver Road, led to reduced traffic gaps from Haefner Drive. Crashes increased to a level exceeding the critical crash rate index resulting in a significant safety concern.
Bolton & Menk completed preliminary and final roundabout design at the intersection. We also worked closely with each property owner directly and indirectly affected by the project. We minimized permanent and temporary right-of-way needs and created a construction staging plan that kept access to the businesses without compromising construction.
Blue Earth County and the City of Mankato now have an intersection that will see a reduction in severe crashes. The project was completed in one construction season, minimizing impacts to the local businesses.
