Improvements to Pioneer Park included ADA accessibility enhancements to adjacent trails and walks, stormwater improvements, area lighting and security features, and a play node which features a shelter and separate areas for older and younger kids and a multi-seasonal water feature/gathering area.
The City of Little Canada recognized the need for enhancements at Pioneer Park, according to a Parks System Plan. The park lacked inclusive and accessible recreational spaces, limiting use by the community. Improvements aimed to break down barriers and welcome everyone into this shared space for recreation and relaxation.
The city used a comprehensive engagement strategy that was completed for park improvements that embraced youth involvement, focus groups, interviews, and a citywide survey that empowered residents to voice their desires for improvements. Following engagement, the city partnered with Bolton & Menk to complete the Pioneer Park Master Plan that served as the guiding document for improvements. Bolton & Menk also assisted in preparing a successful grant application and completing plans for the project. These efforts included creating a play node for all ages and abilities, installing all-inclusive playground equipment, poured-in-place rubber safety surfacing, an accessible water feature, an open-air picnic shelter, and stormwater enhancements.
The enhancements transformed a 1.2-acre section of the park into a hub of community activity, fostering inclusivity and accessibility, and providing functional amenities for recreation and community gatherings.
