Mecklenburg County is enhancing community connectivity and recreational access through the development of 1.5 miles of greenways in southeast Charlotte, featuring improved infrastructure, pedestrian safety measures, and inclusive amenities.
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is advancing its vision of enhancing community connectivity and access to natural spaces through the development of new sections of the Walker Branch and Hoover Creek Greenways in southeast Charlotte, NC. These additions, spanning a total of 1.5 miles, aim to bridge two existing greenway segments between Sledge Road and Rathangan Drive. Once completed, the extended trail network will provide residents with improved access to vital local amenities, including RiverGate (a major commercial and retail hub), the Steele Creek Athletic Association Complex, Steele Creek Library, and Southwest Middle School.
To address the diverse needs of this project, a comprehensive design is being developed by Bolton & Menk, working with partner firms on several elements including flood studies, stream and wetland delineations, stream bank improvements, and pedestrian stream crossings. The greenway also prioritizes safe pedestrian access. The design team and county are coordinating with NCDOT and CDOT for the installation of a HAWK beacon where the trail intersects NC Highway 49 (South Tryon Street). Additional features, such as a trailhead with parking and a proposed playground, will further enhance usability and accessibility for the community.
By prioritizing these infrastructure improvements, Mecklenburg County demonstrates its commitment to fostering recreational opportunities, environmental stewardship, and a more connected and active lifestyle for its residents.
