Harris Ranch Beef Company was required to upgrade wastewater treatment facilities at its Selma, California beef packing plant. Harris constructed primary and secondary treatment facilities for BOD, nitrogen, and phosphorus removal prior to land application.
Bolton & Menk provided engineering design services to both treatment facilities. The primary treatment processes included screening, grit removal, flow equalization, and dissolved air flotation with chemical pretreatment. The secondary treatment processes included anaerobic lagoon with biogas capture and activated sludge with nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The plant was designed to reduce the total nitrogen concentration from 250 mg/L to less than 30 mg/L.
