A spheroid style tank replaced the existing damaged multi-legged south tower.
When Spencer Municipal Utilities discovered one of their two 750 MG multi-legged elevated storage tanks had been damaged by falling ice, they immediately reached out to Bolton & Menk to evaluate options for repair or replacement. It was quickly determined that replacement would be the most cost effective option, prompting Bolton & Menk to move forward with design and construction of a new tank on the same site.
SMU considered several different tank styles including a hydropillar, composite, and spheroidal tank, and ultimately decided to proceed with a spheroid painted with the Spencer Tigers High School colors and logo. A climate controlled valve and electrical room was included in the design to house SMU’s SCADA equipment along with a sink and lab space for water testing. Bolton & Menk coordinated with the local cellular phone providers to maintain service during construction, and schedule the switch over of telecom equipment onto the new tank. The tank was constructed in 2019 and officially brought online in 2020, restoring a critical asset for SMU and the City of Spencer.
